Sri Lankas experience in dealing with drugs of abuse and with the drug abuse problem is unique in many ways. From the sixteenth century until the middle of the twentieth century, the colonial powers regulated the use of opium as a revenue earning measure. Since independence was achieved in 1948, various measures have been taken to scale down the abuse of opium, cannabis and certain pyschotropic substances, but not all these efforts have been successful. In the wake of ethnic problems, there has been an increase in the involvement of Sri Lankan nationals in smuggling drugs across national frontiers. The absence of a comprehensive national policy on drug abuse has been a major constraint on law enforcement and the development of interventions for education, treatment, rehabilitation and crop substitution. Sri Lanka is fortunate to have a rich tradition of networks of government organizations, non-governmental organizations and religious institutions, and these can be mobilized to discourage the use of intoxicating drugs and alcohol.
As a government organization strongly relations with youth, National Youth Services Council considers to take strong step to preventing of drugs among the youth in Sri Lanka. So as initial step we have develop a mobile application to cater this with use of new technology.
“No Drugs Youth” mobile application consists of features that are very easy to handle and conversant to use through the mobile app on smart phones. Those who interfere with the mobile app allow user to identify location or place that he suspends as drug selling place, mark on the map and will allow notify the type of drug, and give small description. After confirming the identified location and description a short message will be send to given email addresses. With the details and the link of the location on message an authorized people can investigation and take legal action on this.
Further this app will help any people to give information securely, efficiently and without identification of their private details regardingsecurity. This will encourage people to engage on anti-drug campaign and actively help eradicating drugs in Sri Lanka.
